A tragedy occurred in northern Germany during an Easter egg hunt – a tree fell on people in the forest, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
This was reported by the publication Metro.
The incident took place on Easter Sunday near Satrup. According to preliminary information, a storm warning was in effect in the region that morning. Around 11:00 AM, a tree approximately 30 meters tall collapsed onto a group of people searching for Easter eggs.
Approximately 50 residents and employees of the “Sterni-Park” residential group, which supports young mothers in difficult life situations, participated in the event.
As a result of the tree’s fall, a 21-year-old woman and her 10-month-old daughter, along with a 16-year-old girl, died. Another 18-year-old victim was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition, where she underwent surgery. An infant with critical injuries was evacuated to a medical facility in Kiel but later died.
Eyewitnesses informed rescuers that several individuals were trapped under the fallen tree. It is known that wind gusts reached speeds of approximately 60 miles per hour.
Rescuers, firefighters, and medics promptly arrived at the scene. As reported by the German publication Bild, services responded immediately after the emergency signal.
The reasons for the tree’s collapse are currently being investigated. Police are examining whether the tree had any damage or signs of disease. The state forestry service has been involved in the investigation.
The Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein, Daniel Günther, described the incident as a “terrible event” and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and injured.
“A terrible accident near Satrup on Easter Sunday has deeply affected us. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased, the injured, and everyone who had to witness this horrific event. In these difficult hours, we wish the affected individuals strength, support, and the help they so urgently need,” Günther stated.
For reference, 76-year-old Briton John Riding suffered a heart attack after winning approximately $377,000 in an online casino, but the payout was canceled due to a technical glitch.
