Porsche, the legendary German automaker, has just unveiled a surprising update for its all-electric Taycan, set to debut with the 2027 model year. In a move that echoes the bold innovations of its rivals, the Taycan will now feature the brand’s E-Shift virtual gear changes, alongside an enhanced Porsche Electric Sport Sound system. This decision marks a significant shift in Porsche’s strategy, seemingly influenced by the impressive performance and driver engagement offered by competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 N — The Inspiration Behind the Change
It seems the performance displayed by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has genuinely impressed Porsche. Previously, Porsche had publicly stated they wouldn’t adopt artificial gear shifts. However, after observing the Ioniq 5 N in action, the German marque has had a change of heart. This strategic pivot was hinted at by Frank Moser, vice president of Porsche’s 718 and 911 model lines, who indicated that customers would have the option to experience virtual sounds and gear shifts, allowing them to choose between a silent drive or an immersive “game-like” experience.
The new E-Shift system, available on all Taycan models (and standard on the Turbo GT), allows drivers to manually shift through eight simulated gears using paddle shifters. This system is designed to replicate the feel of actual gear changes, complete with gear-specific drag torque and a virtual rev limiter. The sound system also adapts to the driving conditions, creating a more engaging auditory experience. It’s important to note that the Taycan retains its actual rear axle-mounted two-speed transmission, though it cannot be manually shifted by the driver. This advanced E-Shift technology is also expected to make its way into future electric Macan and Cayenne models.
Enhanced Technology, Expanded Options, and a Higher Price Tag
Beyond the E-Shift system, the 2027 Taycan receives significant technological upgrades. It now incorporates Porsche Digital Interaction (Porsche DI), boasting faster response times, smoother navigation, and improved performance. This system includes configurable widgets, a 3D vehicle model, more apps, an enhanced AI voice assistant, and expanded smartphone integration. Over-the-air updates for the infotainment system are also now a reality.
All Taycan trims now come standard with the 105 kWh battery pack, capable of DC fast charging up to 320 kW. A new battery health display and an updated wireless charger that supports magnetic ring technology and offers up to 25 watts of charging power are also included. Porsche is also expanding the color palette with 16 new Paint to Sample options, bringing the total to 153. The 2027 Taycan is available for order now, with deliveries starting in the fall. The base rear-wheel-drive model will start at $114,250, a slight increase from the previous year.

Porsche’s decision to introduce simulated gear shifts in the Taycan is a clear acknowledgment of the evolving desires of electric vehicle enthusiasts. While purists may scoff, the reality is that the driving experience in EVs is rapidly advancing, and features that enhance driver engagement are becoming crucial differentiators. By embracing E-Shift, Porsche is not just mimicking a competitor; it’s adapting its iconic driving dynamics to the electric era, proving that even with silent powertrains, the thrill of the drive can be meticulously crafted and delivered. This move signals a broader trend towards making EVs more visceral and emotionally resonant, blurring the lines between traditional performance and cutting-edge electric technology.
