On the fifth day of the NASA astronauts’ journey aboard the Orion spacecraft to the Moon, it became known that the Artemis II mission has entered the Moon’s sphere of gravitational influence. This signifies that the Orion spacecraft has reached the final stage of its flight.

Experts and scientists anticipate that the Artemis II mission astronauts will soon set a new record for the greatest distance traveled from Earth on the way to the Moon, as shared by NASA on April 6, 2026.

Artemis II Mission Enters Lunar Gravitational Field

The astronauts of the Artemis II mission have reached the Moon’s gravitational field. This implies that the spacecraft is now more influenced by the Moon’s gravity than Earth’s.

Upon entering the lunar gravitational zone, the Orion capsule was approximately 63,000 kilometers from the Moon and about 232,000 miles from planet Earth.

It is expected that today, April 6, the Orion spacecraft will approach the Moon at its closest point. This could be around 7,500 kilometers from its far side.

Currently, the astronauts’ flight path resembles a figure-eight pattern around the Earth and Moon.

This trajectory will allow the astronauts to observe both Earth and the Moon simultaneously, as well as witness a solar eclipse.

Additional Information on the Artemis II Astronauts’ Flight

The Artemis II mission marks the first crewed lunar flyby since 1972. It has become the farthest human flight from Earth.

The astronauts launched from the Florida space station on the night of April 1st to 2nd. Four individuals are aboard the spacecraft: Mission Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

Furthermore, the astronauts managed to capture a unique photograph of Earth. The image displays two auroras and even zodiacal light against the backdrop of the planet, which is obscuring the Sun. This is the first photograph of planet Earth in 54 years.
